The investiture of the 3rd Westmeath Delvin Scout Group took place in St. Patrick’s hall on Sunday 11th of July. The event was attended by a large crowd of relatives and friends of all those involved.
As part of the ceremony the scout group provided a guard of honour for the arrival of the Chief Scout Mr Michael John Shinnick Mr Shinnick had made the long journey from Cork earlier that morning to preside over the events. Also in attendance was the County Commissioner Brendan Martin and his wife Monica, the County Management team from Lakelands and the Group Support Facilitator Mr. James Fox.
As part of the ceremony, the Chief Scout, invested scout group leader Jean O’Neill and witnessed the investiture of the remainder of the group. Those invested included Leaders, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and as a result have now been fully integrated into Scouting Ireland.
Michael John Shinnick, the Chief Scout of Ireland, stated that he only attends one investiture per year and felt the ceremony that was held in Delvin, on Sunday last, warranted his attendance. He welcomed the Delvin Scout Group to the ever growing movement, which now stands at forty million worldwide. He spoke of Scouting Ireland as been a thirty-two county organisation and an organisation that actively promotes reconciliation. To demonstrate this he spoke of the on-going development of Scouting Ireland and the development of a state of the art camp site located on the Cavan/Monaghan border. In his speech he said that scouting was an integral part of any community and would in the future help this community to develop and for this reason he urged that the community get behind the leaders with their support.
The event lasted approximately one hour and was followed by refreshments, which were served by the newly invested scouts. The group wish to thank the whole community for their support and would also like to extend a special thanks to both Superquinn who kindly donated the food for the occasion and also Michael Wallace of Wallace Recycling for his donation of refuse bins for the day.
