Fr. Heaney Celebrates 50th Anniversary Of Ordination

The Church of the Assumption, DelvinDelvin looked it’s best on Friday night last. People passing through could be forgiven for thinking that the flags and bunting were for the Body and Soul Festival at Ballinlough, but they would be wrong! The Parish had something to celebrate.

50 years before in June 1964, the Heaney Family had a busy weekend. Fr. Seamus and his brother Fr. Sean, now parish priest of Tullamore, had been ordained on the Saturday and their sister was married on the Monday morning. Fr. Seamus is parish priest of Delvin for the past twenty one years.

Mass was concelebrated by 40 Priests of the Diocese, together with Bishop Michael Smith. The combined choirs of Delvin and Killulagh sang, while the Church and grounds never looked better. Delvin NET Youth Group said the prayers of the faithful.

After Mass the Parish made it’s way to the Community Hall where everyone was invited to tea. The parishioners, schools and Delvin NET presented Fr with gifts. Music and dancing then completed the celebrations.

Fr. Seamus is a wonderful man, always available to those who need him and hopefully he will be with us for many more years to come.
