Junior Football Championship
Delvin 1-06 St. Josephs 1-06
Delvin’s Junior footballers travelled to The Downs GAA grounds last Saturday for their Junior football championship tie with St. Josephs.
Having been given a walk over in their opening round by Loughnavalley this was Delvin’s first outing in the championship and it is one they will feel they left behind them.
On what was a beautiful day for football, St. Josephs came out of the blocks much quicker and a defensive blunder from Delvin handed St.Joseph’s a very soft goal in the opening five minutes.
The Streamstown team kicked on from there and punished all of Delvin’s mistakes to put themselves into a 1-04 to 0-02 lead by half time. Delvin’s two points coming from the boot of Darragh Clinton.
The second half was much better from a Delvin point of view as they fought their way back into the game.
Despite kicking three early wides and St Joseph’s going another point up Delvin then started to put some nice moves together and get some scores on the board to leave the score 1-05 to 0-06 points.
It looked like Delvin with scrape home with a win after substitute John Ivory beautifully finished to the net to leave Delvin a point to the good with ten minutes remaining.
But St. Josephs dug deep and levelled the game from a free late on.
Delvin still had some opportunities to win the game but some poor decisions under pressure proved costly.
However Delvin showed great character to come from 6 points down in the second half to get out of the match with a draw.
Great performances from Sean Carroll, Patrick Clune, Ronan Kelly and Darragh Clinton helped collect the point for Delvin.
