Westmeath Community Development offer a free Care & Repair service aimed at people over the age of 60.
The service has three strands:
- Repair Service
A number of volunteers and tradespeople have registered to carry out small repairs and minor household tasks for elderly people. These include:
- Minor gardening jobs such as mowing a lawn
- Minor DIY jobs such as painting a front door, hanging curtains etc
- Changing plugs, fuses and light bulbs
- Installing security locks, chains & smoke alarms
- The Care Service
A home visiting and befriending Service offered by volunteers. They provide a social contact for older people who may be at risk of isolation in their own homes.
- Daily Contact
This is a daily phone call from a volunteer at a pre-arranged time whether that is daily, weekly or fortnightly. This is to ensure that the person is in good spirits and to check that they do not require additional support or medical attention.
The programme aims to help vulnerable people to remain in their own homes and to live as independently as possible through simple tasks such as improving their living conditions and taking an interest in their general well-being.
