Locals “Not Willing To Wait” For Traffic Calming

A2011 Is Too Late - Delvin Residents Want Traffic A Pedestrian Crossing NOW!The September meeting of Delvin Community Alert was dominated by demands from angry residents that Westmeath County Council provide an immediate solution to the continual abuse of local roads by speeding lorries and other motorists.

The announcement this week that a pedestrian crossing will be provided in the village in 2011 did not impress residents at the meeting, who expressed a shared fear that the proposed works could go the same way as the abandoned village upgrade.

In addition to the crossing, other measures being considered by the council would not necessarily be implemented this side of Christmas.

While it was restated that Community Alert was not established to spearhead such a campaign, it was agreed that the matter is crucially important in ensuring the safety of locals and that it would continue to pursue the matter with councillors. The Committee did however request that individual residents support the call by independently contacting council representatives and others.

In the short term, Sergeant Adrian Regan assured those present that his team would increase the visibility and frequency of speed checks in the local area to deal with offenders.
